Hello everyone!
Today I am sharing the process I did for making my Art Journal cover. This journal was in the December Mixed Media Kit.
The cover of the journal was pretty enough and I almost left it as is..but then I thought..nah..and grabbed my Gesso. I added 2 coats and dried with my heat gun.
Next I grabbed my Finnabair Texture Paste and Prima stencil from the kit and added it to the center.
I then misted the cover using Color Bloom Empress Gold, another item from the Mixed Art kit
After I dried with my heat tool, I added a touch of Color Bloom in Summer Sky and Precious Stone.
*Tip- when using a heat tool to dry, be careful around the binding. The heat will melt the glue holding that together. Keep your heat gun moving and don't concentrate on one are too long*
After the cover was dry, I dabbed some Rub n Buff on the raised edges.
The Creative Embellishment chipboard letters from the Main Kit were perfect for this journal. I used my Golden gel and the Prima Art Sugar from the Mixed Art kit to cover them.
I then cut some of the burlap from the main kit and topped it off with a Petaloo flower from the Small Art kit. I added some burlap strips and glued everything down. I then added some more Summer Sky and used my finger to smear it around the edges..etc.
That was it!
Hope you get inspired Today!
I added some trims to hide the seams. I also tucked some die cuts into the clusters.

Bio: Me in a nutshell...I am living on the Gulf Coast of Florida for half my life, but I will always be a Long Island girl at heart. I am a Registered Nurse by profession and work as a Clinical Nurse III {assistant nurse manager} on a Progressive Care Unit at the hospital for the last 17 years, and my passion for scrapbooking started about 10 years ago. So after a very long day at the hospital, I love to come home and unwind in my studio with paper and embellishments!!! It doesn't matter what kind of project I am into, I just love to create. I have been creating art since I was a little girl. I am married to my high school sweetheart, we have 2 children and a brand spankin new granddaughter. I have been on a number of design teams in the past and currently on Lindy's Stamp Gang, The Dusty Attic and the Heartfelt Creations Alumni Design Teams. I am honored and excited that I was asked to Guest Design for The Flying Unicorn this month!! I am always shopping in The flying Unicorn store, and always find the best stuff!!!
Lisa's Answer: Both of my grandmothers. I lost one when I was 5 years old, she was 49. The other I lost just a few years ago. She was 97. They both loved each other dearly, and I miss them both. To have them together again for lunch would be amazing!! They were both amazing cooks. I would also tell them to bring my mother in law with them. She was also an amazing cook!! She was the inspiration for my daughter becoming a chef.
2nd Question we asked was " What is your 5 favorite songs?"
Lisa's Answer:
Wow, this is hard!! But I can tell you I do have faves. I freakin love music!!
a. "Layla" Derrick and the Dominos (Eric Clapton)
b. "Flying in a Blue Dream" Joe Satriani
c. "Wild Horses" The Rolling Stones
d. " Born To Run" Bruce Springsteen
e. "Let's Stay Together" Al Green
You know Stairway to Heaven and Hotel California are in there somewhere...What can I say. I was a 70's child!!
3rd Question we asked was "If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?"
Lisa's Answer: Tuscany Italy in an old stone, ivy covered home in the middle of a hillside vineyard. It would be a scrapbooker's dream retreat!!
4th Question we asked was "What is other interest you pursue?"
Lisa's Answer: Photography and quilting/sewing. I own 7 sewing machines from a 1922 factory treadle Singer, to my brand new computerized Viking Husqvarna. I collect Singer Featherweights. I moonlight as a photographer.
5th and final question of course it has to be scrappy related ;) "What is you 3 favorite must have tools?"
Lisa's Answer:
1. My Sizzix Bigshot or Vagabond for all of my dies.
2. My paper slicer (Cuts vellum to chipboard like a boss!!)
3. My ATG gun which is tied with Aleene's tacky glue.
I am excited to see what she creates!! We shall see soon!!! Mark your calendars pre orders open on the 20th! You won't wanna miss what Alda has in store for January month!!! It's gonna be a rocking New year!!
It surely is, the most magical time of the year.
Every year I try to make a little something special just for me for Christmas to add to my Christmas collection.
I started with an 8" x 10" canvas and removed the canvas fabric itself from the frame.
Using a mixture of 13 Arts gesso, plastic filler powder and matt white paint I painted my frame, both sides. I didn't measure quantities. I just scooped a little out of the three containers and mixed it altogether until I was happy with the consistency.
I wasn't overly concerned about being neat and tidy and smooth whilst applying my mixture.
I spread it on with the help of a paint brush and a plastic spatula.
A little closer look.
Lots of texture, it's quite thick when I apply it.
Now it's a waiting game for it to dry.
Sometimes I leave the frame to dry overnight, sometimes I am a little more impatient and just have to get out the heat gun to assist in the drying time.
Whilst my frame is drying I normally sort through my Christmas embellishments and decorations.
I've glued an assortment of strung bells from the top right hand side of my frame.
I've adhered a variety of pine cones and baubles.
I've glued some Christmas greenery, some red berries and some white baubles.
You can also see two small red stars.
These wee stars are Darice paper mache stars
- they did have gold thread attached to them so that they could be hung.
I painted gesso over them and after the gesso had dried, I sprayed them with Prima Color Bloom - Carmine Red spray mist - note, this is strong, rich and vibrant in colour and everything it touches will be red - this includes white kitchen tiles, t-shirts, benches ... I mean everything.
I know this, trust me on this one.
Straight after spraying with mist I sprinkled glitter on the top of them and pegged them up to dry.
Once dry, I then snipped the gold thread off my stars.
Here's a side view now of my frame and you can see the texture from the 13 Arts mixture I applied.
Gives it an uneven look and it adds a little character.
A few more close up photos.
and just one more
When I had adhered all my bits and pieces, I then grabbed a paint brush and randomly applied Aleene's True Snow not only on the embellishments but around the frame and on the ribbon.
I love this stuff.
So there you have it.
One canvas frame embellished for Christmas and now being added to my collection.
Happy creating everyone.

It's time for a Build-a-Page using the December Kits. What is that? Basically the process of creating a layout. And I have it on video for you!! But first, the pics.
I know right? That pic is right in your face!! And it wasn't Photoshopped either.....that is the natural lighting from where it was taken. And the Riddersholm Barn Market papers, just set it off perfectly!!
I absolutely adore how the flowers turned out!! You will see me struggle with them in the video....lol
And the leaves....oh my!!!!
Enjoy the process video.....
Supplies:
Did you notice, that I used a few things from past kits? Yes, Alda packs her kits so well, that there are always plenty of leftovers!! And yes, you read that correctly.....sometimes, there are dies included in the kits!!!
Happy Playing!!

Hi everyone!
For this post, I wanted to share my process of trying art journaling. I have never been very good at it..in fact, I struggle with it every time I try! But with the cute Donna Downey Art Journal that is in the Mixed Art kit, I knew I wanted to really try to do more of it.
Now being I'm seriously riding the struggle train, I decided to go on the hunt for inspiration. Although I love to be inspired, it is a rare thing if I lift another one's project. However, when I saw Vicky Papaionnou's art journaling, I was in awe. So I tried to lift her Christmas page which you can see HERE.
First I started by choosing a sheet of paper and grabbing my Golden gel. (I would usually use the lighter gel, but I am out) For the papers today I chose to use Craft & You's "Christmas Story"
I used the gel to adhere the paper to the journal. After I trimmed the sides, I covered the paper with Fired Brick Distress Stain.
Next, I used a 13 arts stencil and some Molding Paste and added my stars.
I cut out several rectangles of the Craft and You papers for my presents and stacked them together to glue down. Using my Spectrum Noir marker, I outlined the presents to make them stand out a little bit more.
I then cut out ribbon and twine to finish up my presents and added the metal tags.
I used a couple of Tim Holtz Stamps from his Christmas Memories collection and then colored them with my markers. I cut Santa out and added him above the gifts. I then used a die cut for the vines and glued them down as well.
Again, using my Spectrum Noir markers, I colored the ornaments, cut them out and used my paper piercer to add gold string and 'hang' them.
For the final touches, I used my White Pen to add some 'dots' around the ornaments and used Aileens Snow here and there. I also added my quote using some stickers from my stash and a saying I cut out from a Victorian Christmas 6x6 paper.
As I was finishing up I accidentally got a glob of mist on the middle of the pages!! EEK!! Oh what to do?? I have to try to cover that up..just have to figure out how without ruining my page! So if you have any ideas or thoughts..please let me know!
Here is the final outcome. I know it's not as pretty as Vicky's but she sure helped me try new things..and that is what it's all about right!! Hope you get inspired to get creative and try something new today!!
Have a wonderful Christmas!!
Next I need to work on the Julie Nutting wood doll shape. They are very sweet shapes and have beautiful natural wood finishes so you don't really even need to paint or color the dolls. I gave mine a blush of color with Prima watercolor pencils and chalk edgers.
First, let's talk about the the watercolor pencils. Watercolor pencils are very pigmented so a little goes a long way, meaning color a bit and and then blend with the water brush. You can always add more color is you want, to enhance. The waterbrush does all the work in activating the pigment from the pencil.
After the canvas has been decorated as desired, I added a finishing touch - using thin gold braiding ( from my stash) around the inside of the doily.
Here is the finished canvas.
