"Believe In Magic" Layout with Lainie Michel

Hello again, it's Lainie here today with a layout I created with the gorgeous Flying Unicorn October Kit of the Month! I decided to go in a bit of a different direction with the kit for this page featuring my lovely daughter Payton, using paints from the Loew Cornell Simply Art Water Colors that were in the Mixed Media Kit for some bright pops of blues and purples against the muted grungy background of the 7 Dots Studios Lost and Found papers.  

 

I started out by adding a ton of texture to the background with some Clear Gel Medium and a random coat of White Gesso.  Next I did some stamping on the background and around the edge of the page using Tim Holtz Distress Ink in Faded Jeans. I also added a little water color to the background for extra depth and some 13 Arts Ayeeda Ink Black splatters.

I tore strips of paper and edged them with acrylic paints (Silks also work great for this.) I then layered more tags and Lost and Found Elements to add to my design. Additionally, I painted the Petaloo DIY Dahlia Flowers in Teastained White in blues and purples by mixing watercolors so they would coordinate with the overall theme.

 I used Ayeeda Powder 3D Silver Microspheres to bolster the texture.

Lastly, I made sure to use some of the black spider-web-y lace trim from the kit and Creative Embellishments "Words" chipboard to finish the look.

Flying Unicorn is so excited to  announce and share with you all, our Guest Designer this month ... Heather Thompson!

 

If you are one of the lucky ones who had the pleasure to meet Heather at Uni Camp 2015, then  you know how amazing this lady is! If not, then let me try to tell you about her. I am not sure though if there are enough  energetic words to  truly know her. 

By night Heather is an RN  and by day a wife and a mother to two adorable children Maksim and Olivia.  They live in the country with Maple Trees, a pond, and gorgeous gardens in Bloomer Wisconsin. 

Heather has been  blogging and sharing her world with us since April 2014  - Heather's Creations Inside and Out - Anything Crafting and Gardening you can think of .  On her blog you can find amazing project inspiration  with so many tutorials and how to's, to great  photographic pictures of her  gardens, family which is inspiration for the soul. 

 

Heather's creative space has also been published in Canadain Scrapbooker Magazine in March 2014, and we can all get a glimpse of where she creates. 

As an  individual I have never met anyone with so much energy and  always wearing a smile! Her heart is truly made of gold with sharing her artistic knowledge, helping anyone who  needs help  and she even shares her homemade amaretto chocolate covered cherries !

 

Here is a glimpse into the creative creations by Heather, but stay tuned there is some amazing  creations coming using our November Kit of the Month!

We are also honored to announce that Heather's creation will be  the inspiration for our  November  Facebook Challenge coming November 01 - so stay tuned....!!

October Build A Page with Lainie Michel

Hello everybody, it's Lainie here today and I am still on my high from Uni-Camp which ended last weekend. It had been mentioned that no one knew if or what I accomplished at camp (heehee) and it is true that I did not get much done because of all the wonderful conversations and classes and life-long friendships being made; however, I did manage to eek out a few projects and this layout was one of them. I used the remainder of my October kit, which happened to coordinate perfectly to this older photo of my son I have wanted to use for quite some time.

 I wasn't really able to get a complete step by step photographed, but I thought I would break down my method into 3 main steps. The first step is usually some kind of mixed media background. For this layout I used Ayeeda Black Gesso and a Tim Holtz Burlap Stencil. Once dried, I added Loew Cornell Watercolors (from the Mixed Media Kit) in rusty browns that were from the Mixed Art Kit. I try to get a concept of a layout in my head and work out my tentative design so that I know where to add gesso and paint behind the design. Even though it looks somewhat hideous at first, I knew that after adding all the elements and pulling it all together, the layout would eventually be fun and interesting.

I always try to do something unusual on a layout if I can, and in the kit some really fun Net Ribbon trim was included. I decided to glue it in an undulating ribbon strip for a home-made embellishment. I ended up loving the natural fiber look (almost like hay) on the layout.

 The second step is figuring out the layers and placement of the photo and the last step is gluing everything down and adding extra details like extra gesso or paint if wanted. The papers, elements and tags were from the October Main Kit 7 Dots Studios Lost and Found, and they perfectly suited the feeling I was trying to attain.

 I loved the Petaloo Flora Doodle Leaves and Darjeeling Flowers. They added such a natural touch to the layout. (Can you spot a bit of Jennifer's raffia on the tag?)

 One last thing worth mentioning. For my layouts, I always try for lots of dimension - I am not a flat scrapper, by any means. I like the shadows and the depth of popping up items so that the eye can travel over and around the layout.

Popsticle sticks

Time for me to share a project.

Remember this wee sneak peek from a few weeks ago?

Well that wee sneak peek comes from this ...

 

 

 I started off with the following :

 

Popsicle sticks - yep, a few plain old naked popsicle sticks turned into something that looked like this ...

 

I mixed some gesso, some paint and some powder on my non stick craft mat.

Have to admit it was quite thick and I just kept adding to the mix until I was happy with the consistency - but I have to be honest here  I really did play and mix.

I plastered it on to my popsicle sticks quite thickly when I applied it.

And I was definitely unsure how it would turn out.

I painted them and left them overnight to dry properly - in fact if I remember rightly I might have left them for close to 24 hours, or thereabouts.

I was absolutely stoked with the way they turned out.

I will never look at a plain old popsicle stick the same way again.

 

I cut a piece of corrugated cardboard [the packaging from a Flying Unicorn box] and I adhered the popsicle sticks to the corrugated cardboard and then I recycled another piece of packaging and adhered to the underside to tidy it up and make it look a little more presentable.

I then layered and embellished with flowers, muslin, a variety of foliage - some of my metal dies had a really good workout, so too did my Cuttlebug.

I popped on a few sequins and added a little gesso as well.

That was my cover. 

Now this cover is on the front of a mini album.

I kept the inside reasonably flat and I didn't add too many lumpy, bumpy embellishments, so that it would sit closed.

I stayed with the same colour scheme inside, green, black, pink, purple and yellow and a little teal blue - using the Prima Garden Fable note cards, flowers and leaves and I used a navy cardstock for the  background.

Hello Everyone! I have been ask by a few folks about mists. What to choose or start out with and so on. Well That is kinda hard for me to choose as I love allllll mists!! I do have 3 different company's I play with a lot so thought I would give a review of what I like about them. I use all 3 in the different mixed media projects that I do and love what each have to provide. 

 

The 3 that I am giving a review over are Shimmerz, Lindy's and 13 Arts.

 

These are in no certain order either.. As I said I love them all! They each have their own spot as my go tos as well! I tried to stay mostly within the same color pallet with all 3. Yellows, Blues and Green. 5 or 6 colors a piece for each company. (what I had in those 3 colors basically) All of my backgrounds have been treated with gesso 1st.

Colors I have used on my sample: Shimmeringz Goldie Lox, Spritz Bamboo Leaf, Coloringz Oh say can you sea, Vibez Jeni B Bleu, Coloringz Mama Sings the blues, Coloringz Keep Palm

This is totally my feel on these mists. They very translucent even the darker colors. Which makes them perfect to work with if you are a heavy handed person, as I can sometimes be. I am not scared of overuse with them. They have none shimmery colors as well as shimmery. They blend very well with one another too. I have used them alongside other mist company's and never have been disappointed. I used no water with the blending on this sample. Just a wet paintbrush here an there. It wasn't extremely wet brush either. I didn't need it to be. I find these mist to be really forgiving mist to work with.

Colors I used: Starbursts Golden Sleigh Bells, Starbursts Baby Blue Eyes Aqua, Starbursts Jack in the Pulpit Teal, Starbursts Afternoon Delight Denim, Flat Fabio T-bird Turquoise, Moonshadow Mystic Malachite.

My thoughts on these mists. One of the very first mists that I have ever owned. I have many colors in these mist too. Pigments are nice, you can tame them down with water. The shimmer quality is deep with these mists. But also you can get colors without the shimmer. Blend well with other colors as well with other companies. Nice rich and vibrant colors. My most fave thing with this company is the shimmer quality and the Moonshadows. The Moonshadows have kinda a sepia tone with color. I love the Moonshadows lots! No water was used other than a wet paint brush for blending same as Shimmerz.

 

13 Arts

Colors I used: Chalk blue light, Chalk Yellow Lemon, Chalk Celadon, Chalk Sap Green, Pearl Navy Blue.

My thoughts on these. Pigment RICH! I had to actually mist some water here. Power house on pigments. They blend very well too. The pearl has a nice shimmer. The chalks have no shimmer. If I need a pigment heavy mist these are my go to mist. They are almost, and I say almost paint like mist. I have to be aware of not overloading my piece with color, but sooo love the vibrant rich colors that these mists have. 

 

Clogging, I haven't had a single brand that has crossed my path that hasn't clogged on a bottle. It is very easy to fix. Just pull the tube out and clean the nozzles good. For the most part this works. Always shake really good as well the mica and pigments settle after they haven't been used for a while. Don't forget you can use a paintbrush and paint on the color as well. You will have more control over where your color goes. You will get nice results either way.

Lemoncraft Layout

Hi all!

Just sharing a layout I did using paper from Lemoncraft's Never Ending Summer Collection.

For this layout I also used the new Tim Holtz Alterations Die from the store. This particular die is called "Mixed Media" and it sure sold out fast! For the flowers I chose to use the Petaloo DIY Flowers which I misted with Shimmerz

Ever since I saw a layout from Jacqueline Moore I have been hooked on rolling my paper to add some dimension into my LO. I topped them off with some wooden embellies from a previous Flying Unicorn kit.

"Frozen Pumpkin"

Hi all,

Today I am sharing my OTP from the October Your Passion, Your Art kit.

I have always been in love with Lynne Woolgar's altered pumpkin from a few years back and wanted to recreate something similar. My assistant at work has a little girl who is obsessed with Frozen, so I decided I would try to make it look Wintery.

I started by painting the pumpkin white so I could have a base. I then used lots..I mean lots of Shimmerz. to get the color I wanted.

I then painted some Bo Bunny Copper Glitter Paste here and there and covered areas using Soft Gel Gloss and added 13 Arts glass beads, Mica Flakes, and microbeads

For the leaves, I first painted them white (they were orange and yellow) added some more microspheres and  misted again with the Shimmerz. I topped them off with some True Snow. I love this stuff! It is amazing and so great to put on Christmas cards and other Winter themed creations!

Easy Pumpkin Card with the October Small Art kit

 

Hi everyone! Today I have a Build a Card tutorial. It is super simple to make. I wanted to do a pumpkin card and that is where I started. I made two cards..the first is with an older Prima collection and the 2nd with the yummy October Small Art Kit from the Flying Unicorn.....Here is the card made with the October kit before we get started.

 

 

I cut out one full size pumpkin shape, another piece I cut smaller and the top piece is the oval one. When the 3 go together it makes up the pumpkin. I did not have a template I just free cut it with scissors. I added some distress ink to all of the edges for depth.

 

Add some cardboard behind the two smaller pieces.

 

Cut two pieces for the background of the card, the top layer about a ½ inch smaller, Ink those edges too! I also inked up all of the Creative Embellishments chippys with the distress ink.

 

Glue the background layers together and add some faux stitch stamping.

 

Glue the pumpkin together and add the same stamping on the layer edges.

 

I added some burlap string to the bottom of the card and just attached with a stapler.

 

Attach the pumpkin to the card leaving some of the burlap string showing. Start to add some embellishments. I added flowers, chip board pieces, string, sequins and a few other things!

 

 

 

Here are my finished cards. I also added in some Shimmerz Goldie Lox mist and drops of Good As Gold Inklingz to finish the cards off. Well that is it, that is my pumpkin cards!

 

Build a Page using the October KOM

Hi! It's Erica and today I'm sharing a layout I created, plus a build a page tutorial using the October Kit of the Month!

 

 

First, I adhered three circles of varying sizes to my base.

 

 

Second, I adhered my first paper layer. Note: I often use a lot of paper when layering, instead of wasting an entire piece that will soon be hidden under another layer I cut a smaller piece in half. This not only keeps my layout from becoming super bulking, but also allows me to save my pretty paper for another layer or layout.

 

 

Third, I adhered a few more small layers, building on top of my first layer.

 

 

Fourth, I added machine stitching and then adhere my photo. Notice how my photo covers the gap in my layers nicely?

 

 

Finally, I added flowers and a title to finish my layout.

Decorated Cigar Box With Tips on Building Clusters

The Cigar Box

So back to my box.  This is a cigar box I bought at a flea market.  This one happens to be a cool black wooden box.  I did absolutely nothing to the box except pull the brand stickers off and smell the inside of the box...mmmmmm.  Reminds me of my grandpa who smoked cigars back in the day. 

 

Cigar boxes are pretty inexpensive. You can search on ebay and etsy and snag some great prices. If you are bold enough, you can walk into a local smoke shop, flash that charming smile of your's and ask for a box or two in your sweetest voice.  Who can refuse you?

I started with the front and made my flower embellishment look like a sunflower.   I used the Petaloo Darjeeling Yellow Daisies and topped it with a Petaloo Daisy Center from the main kit. I liked the simplicity of the sunflower so much that I decided to repeat it on the top and make the piece a bit more cohesive.  

 

 

 

Building a Cluster

On to my clustering and embellishing. I focused on using the Mixed Passion collection as I said above.  When I am  decorating a box, I prefer to have the embellishments set at an angle and not flat on the piece. Why?  Because I am making the piece to place on a shelf or dresser.  You want to be able to see  all the embellishing at a distance and not have to be directly on top of the piece to appreciate it's detailed beauty.  If the flowers and leaves were arranged flatly, like a scrap page, then you lose all the purpose of the decor.   

 

Step 1. I started with my main flower and work outward. A cluster needs an "anchor".  That will be my largest main Petaloo flower.  I also inked the petals of the flower to enrich it.  I glued the flower onto the box at an angle. 

 

Step 2.  The anchor flower is set at an angle but now needs some support so it can stay at an angle and not squish down over time. Something needs to be added behind the flower.  In this case I used the Prima leaf vines because they have wired stems.  The wire acts as a super great support. 

 

You have no wired vines you say? OK, then glue several small pieces of cardboard together or several layers of foam tape to support the flower.  I also used the wooden key embellishment that came in the kit and glued it behind the flower to support the flower.  Metal pieces work well also - as do small hinges that are bent with one side glued down and the other side as support.

 

Step 3. Now that the main anchor flower is secure and well supported with something, the back of the cluster looks like a hot mess.  No worries!  This is where the magic of embellishing comes into play.  I pulled out the gorgeous weave trim that came in the main kit and used that to cover all that unsightly horror behind the flower.   I tied a giant bow and glued it to cover up all the mess.  The bow needs to be large enough to cover messes AND large enough to be taller than the anchor flower.  It needs to be seen.   I left long bow tails because they will be used to help cover messy areas.  I secured my bow with dabs of glue to the anchor flower and I glued down the bow tails to the box. They can't flutter about if they are meant to cover messes.

Step 4. Start building the cluster.  I like both sides of the cluster to resemble each other without being exactly the same. They don't need to have similar flowers but I think they need to be similar in color.  I also like one side of the cluster to be slightly longer than the other, including the ribbon piece.  I stray from symmetry. That's just me.

Finishing the Cluster

The cluster is pretty much done.  I've added all the flowers and leaves that I care to add. To fill in the bare spots, I love to add snippets of stuff.  In this case my "stuff" happens to be cheap floral berries cut apart and glued down.
